Personal insurance
Everything inside, protected.
Turns out replacing your entire house contents costs more than you thought.
- Do I really own that much stuff?
- What happens after a break-in?
- Will load-shedding claim another victim?
Most people can tell you what their car is worth. Far fewer know what it would cost to replace everything in their home tomorrow. The TVs, couches, beds, laptops, appliances, clothing, curtains, air fryers and everything else that quietly adds up over the years.
Household contents insurance protects the things that make your house feel like home. Because after a burglary, fire or power surge, "We'll just replace it" can become a very expensive sentence.
What Household Contents covers
Do I really own that much stuff?
Most people underestimate the value of their contents. Until they start adding up every room.
What happens after a break-in?
Replacing one stolen TV is annoying. Replacing half a house is something else entirely.
Will load-shedding claim another victim?
Power surges have ended the careers of many TVs, routers and appliances. Insurance can help soften the blow.
What would it cost to start over?
Furniture, electronics, clothing, appliances and everything in between. It adds up faster than most people think.
Can I insure life's little accidents?
Because laptops fall, coffee spills and children occasionally test the laws of physics.
What's in your freezer?
You don't realise how much food costs until Eskom turns your freezer into a fridge.
Who household contents is for
- People who own more than they think they do
- Anyone who'd struggle to replace everything at once
- Families with a growing collection of expensive stuff
- South Africans who know exactly what a power surge sounds like
Household Contents FAQs
Will contents insurance cover my laptop?
At home, yes — theft, fire, power surge and accidental damage are usually covered under a good contents policy. Away from home is a different story. Your laptop at the coffee shop, the airport or your kid's school sports day isn't automatically covered. That's where portable possessions (all-risk) cover comes in. We can make sure your laptop is covered wherever it actually goes.
Does contents cover protect against power-surge damage?
Usually, yes. Power surge damage to appliances and electronics inside your home is covered by most contents policies — which is good news given how often our grid reminds us it's having a moment. Worth checking: some insurers have limits on surge claims or require a surge protector to have been in place. We'll make sure you know what your policy actually covers before you need to find out the hard way.
Can I claim for food spoiled during a power outage?
Sometimes, yes. Some insurers offer optional freezer contents cover or benefits. Because replacing a freezer full of food hurts a lot more than it did a few years ago.
Will contents insurance pay new-for-old?
Many insurers replace items on a new-for-old basis, but it depends on the policy wording and the type of item.
